The Flintlock

Torsten Lenk

From the cover: “The text of this exhaustive work of reference on the construction, form and decoration of the flintlock was fully revised and corrected by Dr. Lenk for this first English translation.

On its original publication in Sweden in 1939 it was acclaimed as the most important book on the subject yet produced. J. F. Hayward stated, ‘this great work is doubtless the most important and most splendidly produced single work in the literature of arms and armour’. The late Sir James Mann wrote, ‘an important and lavishly produced study of the development of the flintlock’.

This translation was made in Sweden by G. A. Urquhart with the assistance of Swedish specialists. The text has been revised by J. F. Hayward who also contributes a new introduction. The original Swedish edition was criticised because of its many misprints, which have been corrected in this new edition. The book has extensive references, now revised and brought up to date, taking into account the changes in various collections of arms over the last twenty years. There is a bibliography of the whole subject and a new index, making this book a valuable source of reference for every collector, dealer, historian and amateur of firearms.

The 134 full page illustrations, for which this, book has been sought after in all parts of the world, are reproduced in facsimile. There are also five illustrations in the text.”
